Justification, what is it?

Published:2022-08-02

Justification is a trace on a coin after adjustment in the mint, i.e. collecting excess material in the coin production process. This is often visible as characteristic, parallel "scratches" on the coin. This action was aimed at adjusting the weight and value of the ore to the originally assumed (standard).

Adjustment was carried out by filing the edge of the coin, and from the 19th century by using special cutters collecting excess from the surface of the coin.

Justification - as an element of the coin production process - does not affect the assessment of the coin's condition.
